How to read the pay chart

Find your pay grade (rank) in the left column, then move right to the column for your cumulative years of service. The figure is monthly, gross basic pay in US dollars. A column labeled "Over 4" applies once you have more than 4 years of service, until you pass 6. A dash means DFAS publishes no rate for that grade at that length of service. Multiply by 12 for an annual figure.

Basic pay is the taxable core of military compensation. It does not include BAH (housing), BAS (food), special pays or bonuses. Source: DFAS, effective January 1, 2026.

BAS 2026: Basic Allowance for Subsistence

BAS is a monthly, non-taxable food allowance. It is the same for every grade within each group.

What changed from 2025

Basic pay increased 3.8 percent across the board on January 1, 2026, per the Congressional Research Service. BAS rose about 2.4 percent, from $465.77 to $476.95 for enlisted members and from $320.78 to $328.48 for officers. BAH is updated separately each year from local housing costs.

Using the chart

Basic pay is only one part of the package. Add BAS, your BAH from the official DoD BAH lookup and any special pay in the Basepass military pay calculator. Planning a 20-year career? The military retirement calculator turns these rates into a BRS or High-36 pension estimate, and the military retirement pay chart 2026 lists typical pensions by rank. Beyond pay, service members and veterans may qualify for health care, education, home loan and state programs. Our veteran benefits guide explains where to start, and Basepass matches them to your profile.

Basepass is independent and not affiliated with DFAS or the Department of Defense. Figures are transcribed from the DFAS tables effective January 1, 2026; your Leave and Earnings Statement is the final word. This page is informational, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much was the 2026 military pay raise?

Basic pay rose 3.8 percent on January 1, 2026, according to the Congressional Research Service. The increase follows the statutory formula tied to the Employment Cost Index, and the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act did not override it.

What is the 2026 BAS rate?

DFAS lists BAS effective January 1, 2026 at $476.95 per month for enlisted members and $328.48 per month for officers.

Does the military pay chart include BAH?

No. The chart shows basic pay only. BAH is set separately by duty location, pay grade and dependent status. Use the official DoD BAH calculator, or add your BAH in the Basepass military pay calculator.

Is military basic pay taxable?

Yes, basic pay is taxable income. BAS and BAH are generally not subject to federal income tax. Combat zone service can exclude pay from tax. Check your Leave and Earnings Statement or a tax professional for your situation.

Why do some cells in the chart stay the same for many years?

Pay rises with years of service only up to a grade's cap. For example, E-4 pay stops rising after the Over 6 column, since members normally promote or separate before reaching more years in that grade. The table repeats the same figure through the remaining columns.

What does O-1E, O-2E or O-3E mean?

Officers in grades O-1 to O-3 who were credited with more than 4 years of active service as an enlisted member or warrant officer are paid on a separate, higher scale, often labeled O-1E, O-2E and O-3E.
