100% disabled veteran benefits by state: property tax

The biggest state benefit for most 100% veterans is a property tax exemption on their home. Each state sets its own rules, and many require P&T. A few examples from official state sources:

StateWho qualifiesExemption
Texas100% rating, or paid at 100% through unemployabilityFull homestead exemption
FloridaHonorably discharged, service-connected total and permanent disabilityFull homestead exemption
Virginia100% service-connected, permanent and totalPrincipal residence exempt
California100% rating or paid at 100% for unemployability (also blindness or loss of limbs)2026: $180,671 of assessed value, or $271,009 if household income is below $81,131
Georgia100% rating or paid at 100% for unemployability, and certain statutory awards$121,812 of value in 2025 (adjusted yearly)
Illinois70% or more service-connectedFirst $250,000 of equalized assessed value
Washington80% or more, or paid at the 100% rate, within county income limitsProperty tax exemption through the county assessor

Many states also offer vehicle registration, license, tuition and state park benefits for disabled veterans, such as the Texas Hazlewood Act. Rules and amounts change every year, so confirm with your county assessor or state veterans agency before you file.

Disabled veteran discounts

Most national retail discounts are veteran discounts, not disabled-veteran discounts: your rating doesn't change them, and they usually just ask you to prove you served, often through ID.me or SheerID. A VHIC or Veteran ID Card covers most of them. Where a rating does matter, it's usually a government benefit, not a store discount:

Getting help with a claim

Basepass doesn't file claims or advise on ratings. If you think your rating should be higher or P&T, work with a VA-accredited representative (a Veterans Service Organization, attorney or claims agent), which you can find through VA's accredited representative search.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 100% disabled veteran get per month in 2026?

VA's rates effective December 1, 2025 are $3,938.58 a month for a veteran alone and $4,158.17 with a spouse and no children or parents. Children and dependent parents increase the amount. These are tax-free VA compensation payments.

How much is 100% VA disability with a spouse and 2 kids?

$4,428.10 a month in 2026 for a veteran with a spouse and two children under 18 (no dependent parents). That is the $4,318.99 spouse-and-one-child rate plus $109.11 for the second child.

What is the difference between 100% and 100% P&T?

A 100% rating is the compensation level. Permanent and total (P&T) means VA has rated the disability 100% and does not expect it to improve. Several family benefits, including CHAMPVA and Chapter 35 education, require the P&T designation, not just a 100% rating.

What benefits does the spouse of a 100% P&T disabled veteran get?

The main ones are CHAMPVA health coverage and Chapter 35 (DEA) education benefits, both for spouses and children of veterans rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability. If the veteran dies, the spouse may qualify for DIC, including when the veteran was rated totally disabled for at least 10 years before death.

Does TDIU count as 100%?

For pay, yes. VA pays TDIU (individual unemployability) at the same rate as a 100% rating, though the combined rating itself does not change. Some benefits, such as Class IV dental care and the Texas 100% homestead exemption, explicitly include veterans paid at the 100% rate through unemployability.

Do 100% disabled veterans pay property taxes?

It depends on the state. Property tax relief is set by each state. For example, Texas fully exempts the homestead of a veteran who is 100% disabled or unemployable and paid at the 100% rate, and Florida and Virginia also exempt the homes of veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability. Check your state's tax agency for the exact rules.

Do 100% P&T veterans get Social Security disability faster?

Yes, when they apply. Social Security's operating manual says claims from veterans with a VA 100% P&T disability compensation rating get priority processing at every level, with expedited appointments. You still have to apply to Social Security and meet its own disability rules, and you may need to show your VA rating letter. A 100% P&T pension rating does not count.

Does VA disability count as income for SSI?

Yes. Social Security treats VA compensation paid to a veteran, spouse, child or surviving spouse as unearned income for Supplemental Security Income, with the $20 general income exclusion. Parts of a VA payment for unreimbursed medical expenses, aid and attendance or housebound status are not counted.

Do 100% disabled veterans get extra store discounts?

Usually not. Most national retail and theme park discounts are open to all veterans who can prove service, so a 100% rating doesn't increase them. The savings that depend on your rating are mostly government benefits: state property tax exemptions, no VA home loan funding fee, commissary and exchange access, and Space-A travel for 100% P&T veterans.

Can 100% disabled veterans fly Space-A?

Yes. Air Mobility Command lists veterans with a permanent service-connected disability rated as total in Space-A Category VI, the lowest-priority category. Seats depend on space after other travelers are accommodated.

Can Basepass help me file a VA claim or raise my rating?

No. Basepass does not prepare or file VA claims. For help with a claim, use a VA-accredited representative, which you can find with VA's accredited representative search. Basepass helps you see which benefits and discounts you may qualify for and links to the official source for each.
